Overview of Services

SIMPLER is a research infrastructure hosted by Uppsala University, and managed by a consortium consisting of Uppsala University, Karolinska Institutet, Chalmers University of Technology and Örebro University, and with support from the county councils of Uppsala, Västmanland and Örebro. SIMPLER stands for Swedish Infrastructure for Medical Population-based Life-course and Environmental Research. The infrastructure includes 110 000 women and men, born between 1914-1952.

The Swedish Mammography Cohort (SMC) was founded in 1987-1990 when women living in Uppsala and Västmanland counties were invited to participate in the study in connection with a mammography screening. The Cohort of Swedish Men (COSM) started ten years later in 1997 when men living in Västmanland and Örebro counties were included coinciding with the first follow up of SMC. Two additional follow ups have been performed in 2008/2009 and in 2019. Questionnaire data are supplemented with register data from the Swedish Board of Health and Welfare and from regional and local registers. For a subset of these participants, biological samples were collected and genome profiled.

In 2003 the Swedish Mammography Cohort clinical (SMCC) subcohort in Uppsala was established for collection of biological samples and clinical data, and in 2010, SMCC in Västerås and Cohort of Swedish Men clinical (COSMC) in Västerås were established. For women in SMCC in Uppsala, a clinical follow up started in 2015. Questionnaire data and those collected at the clinic visits are supplemented with register data from the Swedish Board of Health and Welfare and from regional and local registers. For all participants in the subcohorts, biological samples and -omics data are available.
